The life of Sara Fergus, schoolteacher and manageress of the Dark Lantern tea room, was uneventful, except for Delphine Thibault’s daily visits to call for food for some mysterious invalid. Then a very frightened girl tumbled out of a muddy yellow roadster into Sara’s arms—and the fun began. The fugitive stayed the night, after hiding a death certificate under Sara’s rug. When she fled in the morning, she left behind a bloodstained nightgown. And in a tourist cabin down the road a man lay dead with Sara’s kitchen knife in his back. Not to mention the corpse in a room of the farm where the glamorous Delphine lived.
