Connington: Jack-in-the-Box

An archaeologists digging up a stolen Viking gold hoard in England is murdered during a Nazi air raid. Sir Clinton Driffield investigates while a local occultist claims to have discovered a way to kill at a distance (and the body count rises). Review You can’t be too facetious about this one. It’s too good a picture of a typical English community in war time. The mystery story is tops, the characters wonderfully drawn, and Sir Clinton Driffield is at his best. Not too hard to dope out, however, which sometimes helps the old ego. (Boston, MA, Globe , 1944)
